The Cycle Hubs and the SMART corridor
There are so many good reasons to cycle to work - it reduces congestion on our roads, means that you don’t get stuck in traffic and it’s good for health and wellbeing.
Cycle hubs make it easier for people to cycle to work, allowing you to store your bike safely and securely.
The council, through its partners - Community Action Isle of Wight and Red Funnel – have set hubs up at Newport and Cowes.
- Are fully enclosed.
- Have a universal repair stand and a range of tools.
- Benefit from 24 hour CCTV and lighting.
Cowes Cycle Hub is next to Red Funnel’s Red Jet terminal in Cowes. The Cowes Hub incorporates dual-level storage for 72 bikes.
Newport Cycle Hub is based next to the Riverside Centre. The Newport Hub has capacity for 16 bikes via ground-level stands, rack space and includes lockers as well as access to shower facilities at the Riverside Centre. For more information on the Newport Cycle Hub, please contact Philippa Daley at email@example.com or call (01983) 539374.
The 5.1 kilometre Cowes to Newport cycle track links both cycle hubs and is part of the National Cycle network (route 23) linking Cowes with Sandown via Newport. The route follows the western bank of the River Medina along the former Cowes to Newport railway line. View all the routes on the PedalAid website.
Bicycle Island - 'PedalAid' app
The Bicycle Island app has had a major makeover and is now called PedalAid.
It’s still encouraging people to get on their bike and ride, and in doing so raise money for local Island charities. It now covers a wider area – from Cowes to Sandown, Shanklin and Wroxall.
The Cowes to Newport cycle track is also home to the UK’s first SMART cycling corridor to use the ground-breaking Pedalaid app. The App combines everyone’s GPS-logged miles to challenge monthly distance targets and unlock money for charity campaigns. Riders will also be able to find offers placed along the different routes, with more SMART routes coming in the future.
Find out more about the app, routes, current fundraisers and the SMART cycling corridor on the new Pedalaid website
