Health Checks

As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing something dangerous like high blood pressure, heart disease or Type 2 diabetes. Your NHS Health Check can spot early signs and help prevent these happening to you, which means you'll be more likely to enjoy life for longer.

The full NHS Health Check takes 20 to 30 minutes and covers:

  • Height and weight measurement (BMI)

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol check

  • Questions on family history and lifestyle choices

  • Diabetes risk

  • Cardiovascular Disease risk score

  • Dementia risk

 

After your health check you will be taken through your results and provided with personalised advice. Once you are aware of your individual risks, you’ll be able to take steps to reduce them, improving your chance of maintaining or improving your health as you get older. 

Health Check eligibility criteria:

  • Between 40 – 74 years old

  • Not been diagnosed or prescribed medication for: heart disease, high cholesterol (statins), diabetes, kidney disease or high blood pressure

  • Not have received an NHS health check in the last 5 years

When you will be invited for free NHS Health Check

If you are eligible you will receive an invitation letter from your GP around your 40th, 45th, 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th and 70th birthdays.

Benefits of taking the free NHS Health Check

Taking up the offer of a free NHS Health Check could improve your health overall it will improve the health and wellbeing of people on the Island through early detection and in the long term should reduce the cost on health and social care services.

Sugar Smart Isle of Wight

Many of us are consuming too much sugar, especially children and this is increasing levels of tooth decay, obesity and Type 2 diabetes.

On the Isle of Wight nearly a quarter of reception year children (aged 4-5 years) and a third of Year 6 (aged 10-11 years) are overweight or obese. By adulthood, two-thirds are overweight or obese on the Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight Health and wellbeing board support the Isle of Wight becoming more aware of sugar consumption   and support the Sugar Smart Isle of Wight campaign to raise awareness of hidden sugars, recommend levels and healthy alternatives by encouraging individuals, groups, businesses, schools and organisation to join the campaign and make a pledge.
