Answer: The Council’s Countryside Section maintains habitats to allow the Island’s biodiversity (flora and fauna) to flourish. The Council also supports the AONB Partnership, which aims to conserve the beauty of the Island’s most precious landscapes.

Answer: Agenda 21 promotes sustainable development. This means enabling people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations.

Answer: Agenda 21 looks at ways of protecting the natural environment, reducing pollution and conserving resources so that future generations have the same opportunities that we have today.

Question: What are the priorities for Local Agenda 21 at the moment?

Answer: On the Island Agenda 21 is looking at renewable energy and secured a grant for the photovoltaic (solar electric) roof at Medina High School. It is also promoting sustainable building practices and is promoting the Pan Urban Extension as a flagship sustainable development. It is working with the Primary Care Trust to promote healthy homes, public transport and local food networks. Agenda 21 is also seeking to reduce the Council’s environmental impact through reducing its use of natural resources. The Agenda 21 Strategy can be found at - Related Link

Answer: Try to reduce your energy and water consumption. Leave the car at home and walk, cycle or use public transport wherever possible. Reduce your household waste and recycle as much as possible. These websites will provide good advice:

Answer: More and more businesses are finding that being sustainable makes good business sense and appeals to their customers. Small and medium sized businesses on the Island can get a free environmental audit from a local project, ecoBIZ, which can be contacted on 527333. Businesses in the tourist sector should first contact Green Island Awards on 823646.

Answer: Agenda 21 has set up the Green Island Awards to accredit businesses in the tourist sector who are environmentally friendly. Eco-tourism is a growing market and the project hopes to make the Isle of Wight the destination of choice for green tourism. - Related Link
