Registering for Tattooing, Piercing, Acupuncture or Electrolysis on the Isle of Wight

If you want to offer treatments like tattooing, piercing, acupuncture or electrolysis, you must register with the Isle of Wight Council. This helps protect public health and ensures your business meets safety standards.

The Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982 Part VIII also requires this.

Who Needs to Register?

You must register if you plan to:

  • tattoo
  • pierce ears or body
  • offer acupuncture
  • provide cosmetic piercing
  • perform electrolysis
  • offer microblading

You need to register:

  • yourself as a practitioner
  • The premises where treatments will take place

You don’t need to register if you're a medical practitioner.

Why Register?

Registration helps prevent the transmission of blood borne viruses, like HIV and Hepatitis or other infections. It also ensures your equipment and procedures are safe and hygienic and follow health and safety regulations.

The Council follows byelaws that set out standards for this.

How to register

You can register online.

You will need to pay the registration fee when you submit your application.

You can also register for a premises online.

What happens after I have applied to register?

After you apply to register, we will inspect the premises.

You must make sure that procedures, equipment and facilities are:

  • safe
  • hygienic
  • prevent the spread of disease
  • follow duty of care required by the Health and Safety at Work legislation

This will help you to comply with registration requirements. 

Please note that you cannot trade until your premises has been inspected by the Local Authority and your registration granted.

What must I do when my registration is granted?

You need to display:

  1. Premises registration certificate
  2. Practitioner registration certificate
  3. Special treatments Byelaws (PDF, 79KB)
