Other discounts and exemptions

Some people living in your household may be disregarded and a discount may be awarded.

These can include:

• most full-time students or students under 20 years of age
• student nurses
• anyone under 25 years of age who is training under the national traineeship scheme
  
• apprentices who earn less than £195 per week before tax
• foreign language assistants registered with the British Council
• live-in carers looking after someone other than a child under the age of 18 or their partner
• long-term hospital patients or care home residents
• hostel or night shelter residents
• members of International Headquarters and Defence Organisations, and their dependants
• religious community members who have no income or savings
• visiting armed forces and their dependants if they are not British citizens
• some foreign diplomats
• anyone detained by order of a court, or under the Immigration Act 1971 or the Mental Health Act 1983
• some school or college leavers under the age of 20
• people with a severe mental impairment
• adults aged 18 or over for whom child benefit is still payable.

If you live with people who are disregarded for council tax, your discount will normally be 25%.

If you and everyone living with you are disregards, your discount may be up to 50%.

Any discounts you get are applied automatically and are shown on your council tax bill.

You may get a reduction if you are between 18 and 24 years of age and you have been identified as a care leaver by our Leaving Care team. The team will apply for discount on your behalf.
