Reducing reoffending
Reducing Reoffending
Community Safety Partnerships are responsible for reducing reoffending in the local area. This is achieved by developing and having a strategy in place along with an action plan to tackle reoffending and identify ways of preventing offending.
There is a reducing reoffending sub group in place to implement the above which is lead by:
- Her Majesty's Prison and Probation Service
- Youth Offending Team.
A conference was held in 2017 'Reoffending - Everybody's Business' to begin the work on the strategy. View slides from the conference (PDF, 4.87MB) along with the final 2018/2021 strategy (PDF, 520KB).
Restorative Justice
Restorative Justice has been successful in reducing reoffending. The Restorative Justice Service in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight is funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner. The funding has been allocated by the Ministry of Justice through the Victim’s Fund and the vision is that victim focused, quality Restorative Justice will be available at all stages of the Criminal Justice System.
Key points:
- Restorative justice brings together people harmed by crime or conflict with those responsible for the harm, to find a positive way forward.
- Restorative justice gives victims the chance to tell offenders the real impact of their crime, get answers to their questions and get an apology.
- Restorative justice holds offenders to account for what they have done. It helps them understand the real impact, take responsibility, and make amends.
The Office of Police Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and Isle of Wight have developed a strategy for delivering Restorative Justice, to find out more information, please visit the website.
