Friends' and Supporters' Groups
Friends or Supporters’ Groups have been set up in all six of the Council run libraries - Cowes, Freshwater, Lord Louis, Ryde, Sandown and Ventnor. Visit them on Facebook via the links below:
- Friends of Sandown Library.
- Friends of Freshwater Library.
- Friends of Ventnor Library.
- Supporters of Cowes Library
- Friends of Lord Louis Library
- Friends of Ryde Library
One major role of Friends’ Groups is fundraising to provide additional resources for their local libraries. Money raised is spent on improving the library, adding to the enjoyment of those using it. Examples where money has been spent so far include display stands, toys and games for children’s libraries, additional easy chairs, or even decorating sections of the library.
Extra funds and volunteer hours also enable the Friends Groups to increase the number of activities held in libraries:
- author visits
- writers’ workshops
- magic clubs
- storytelling and craft events.
These are just some of the things supported in Libraries so far by Friends’ and Supporters’ Groups.
Friends also provide practical support: by helping to host book groups and other events, preparing refreshments, and meeting and greeting visitors, which allows the Libraries’ friendly welcome to be extended to more customers.
Friends’ Groups can also make sure that local views are accurately reflected to the decision-makers responsible for the service. Friends help to raise the profile of their local library and increase awareness of local needs.
