Big Mead Pond - an update
Published: 6 August 2025
The Isle of Wight Council would like to reassure residents that Big Mead Pond continues to be actively managed and monitored. A recent inspection by our team confirmed that the fish remain healthy and the water level, while lower than usual due to the prolonged dry weather, is not currently at a critical level.
However, due to the continued forecasted dry weather 1,000 litres of water will be added to the pond each day. This will continue until we have enough rainfall to reactivate the natural spring that feeds the pond.
To ensure the fish and wildlife stay as healthy as possible the amount of fresh water that is added to the pond has to be controlled. This ensures it is sufficiently diluted so that any chemicals present in the water do not pose any risk to the fish or the pond’s ecosystem.
The Isle of Wight Council remains committed to maintaining the health of Big Mead pond and the ecosystem it supports. The pond will continue to be monitored closely and we will provide updates in the future.
