If your property has been damaged by flooding, please be on your guard against rogue traders who may take advantage of the situation and try to convince you to pay for unnecessary or over-priced repair work.

When extreme weather hits the county, legitimate traders are in high demand and this can sometimes mean that rogue traders look to cash in on those affected by flood damage.

Rogue traders may quote low prices, but they will soon demand more money and very often the work they claim needs doing is completely unnecessary.

Our advice is:

  • avoid dealing with anyone calling unannounced
  • where possible get more than one quote
  • get a written contract and obtain a detailed description in writing of the work being done
  • use our Trader Approval Scheme and make sure anyone you use is genuine
  • be aware of doorstep scams, use out helpful guide to doorstep crime

Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Never be afraid to close the door or hang up if something doesn't feel right.

If you think you've fallen victim to a rogue trader, you can report this to the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline by calling 0808 223 1133. You can also contact them for advice prior to entering into a contract to purchase goods or services.
