This No Smoking Day, take the first step towards a healthier, smokefree life and start to feel the benefits of stopping smoking within 72 hours!

This is the message from the Director of Public Health for the Isle of Wight highlighting new research that on average, every cigarette smoked reduces how long a person is expected to live by approximately twenty minutes.

Simon Bryant, the Isle of Wight’s Director of Public Health said, “Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health, now and in the future. Despite the rates of smoking decreasing, it remains the leading preventable cause of ill health and early deaths on the Isle of Wight today, with more than 11,000 people continuing to smoke and countless more exposed to second-hand smoke in homes, at work, and in outdoor public places. National No Smoking Day is an excellent opportunity for those who smoke to take the first step towards giving up.

“Quitting smoking really does help people to ‘Take Back Your Life.’ Just 72 hours after quitting, your breathing will feel easier, and your energy will increase. After 12 weeks, your blood circulation will improve and within a year of quitting, your risk of heart attack will have halved compared to a person who smokes.”

Councillor Debbie Andre, Cabinet member for adult social care and public health, said: "Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the UK, and it's important to remember that no matter how long you've smoked, quitting can significantly improve your health and wellbeing. We hope many more people will be encouraged to access the free support to quit smoking for good, even if they have already tried.”

“Quitting smoking isn’t just a positive step for your own health, it also benefits those around you, especially family members in your household. Second hand smoke can have serious health impacts, particularly for children and vulnerable adults. By making a change today, you’re not only improving your own wellbeing but also creating a healthier environment for your loved ones”
