Where does your general waste go
General household waste is picked up at the kerbside.
It is taken to be sorted at the Mechanical Treatment site at Forest Park.
The machinery there further sorts the waste and picks up items that can be recycled from this.
However, the quality of items that can be recovered won’t be as good a quality as that which you put out clean and dry in your recycling collection.
What is left is then burnt at the Energy from Waste facility. Energy generated from this will power the Forest Park site and also fed back into the National Grid.
As a last resort – anything else that cannot be reused, recycled or recovered then goes to landfill.
