Christmas drink drive campaign

Drink a little. Risk a lot.

Locally, roughly two thirds of casualties in drink-drive collisions are males aged 17-30

16 to 24 year-olds make up 24% of casualties in drink-drive collisions nationally, while 68% of casualties involved in drink-drive collisions are male

We're supporting the Department for Transport’s THINK! Christmas campaign.

We want to highlight to young men the consequences of drink driving - from losing their licence and the effect this has on their personal freedom and social life, to the risk of injuring their friends. It challenges perceptions around personal limits. It raises awareness that even a little bit of alcohol can put you and your licence at risk.

  • 50% of young male drivers intend to be sensible but often get carried away while socialising, putting themselves at risk, even with a small amount of alcohol
  • DfT research shows that young drivers can be as concerned about a loss of freedom as much as the more serious consequences
  • research also shows that young men are most impacted by seeing how the consequences of drink driving 'ladder'—one event leading to another— rather than simply showing one isolated consequence
  • a combination of punitive (licence loss), physical (injury) and social (freedom, seeing friends) consequences is effective at conveying the range of risks

Simply put...

Drink driving is illegal and puts lives at risk as it impairs your ability to drive — even if it's just one drink.

  • alcohol affects everyone differently
  • it’s impossible to know your limits – it depends on your size, your age, your gender, what you’ve eaten, even how stressed you are that day
  • if you’re convicted of driving over the legal alcohol limit, you will lose your licence.
  • if you drink a little, you risk a lot
  • losing your licence isn’t just a minor inconvenience – it impacts your social life, your job, the freedom you worked so hard for
  • drinking even a little alcohol impairs your driving and reaction times
  • it could mean the difference between a close call and a mistake you’ll never forget.
  • the impact of drink driving extends beyond you— it can affect other people, your family, your friends
  • you risk injuring yourself and others, or worse

Don’t risk it all for a couple of pints – if you’re driving, always opt for 0% or a soft drink.

If you're visiting family and friends or attending an event, plan a safe route home!

Use public transport, book a taxi, or designate a driver who will remain sober.

Your designated driver doesn't need to feel left out; they can drink alternatives such as soft drinks, mocktails or zero alcohol drinks.
