Emerging Island Planning Strategy

We are preparing a new local plan, called the Island Planning Strategy, to replace the Island Plan Core Strategy.

The Island Planning Strategy (IPS) is used to guide development on the island over the next 15 years. The plan is developed by the Council in consultation with the local community. It will deal with future needs and opportunities in relation to

  • environment
  • community
  • growth
  • housing
  • economy
  • transport

We undertook a public consultation on a draft version of the Island Planning Strategy in 2021 following a previous public consultation in 2018.

The public consultation closed on Friday 1 October 2021. All comments received were reviewed in detail. Some of the headlines from the comments received can be read in the IPS consultation update December 2021. A full summary of all of the comments can be read in the Reg 18 draft IPS (August and September 2021).

A decision was made at the Extraordinary Meeting of Full Council on Wednesday 1 May 2024 to agree to publish the Regulation 19 submission version of the IPS for a period of public representation. This 6 week period is likely to start early June 2024 and all relevant documents will be published at that time together with details on how to comment.

After the 6 week period has finished the council will submit

  • the IPS
  • the evidence base
  • all comments received by the Secretary of State for the public examination

The Secretary of State will then appoint an independent Planning Inspector to carry out the public examination of the plan, evidence base and comments made.
