Scheduled Monuments

What is a scheduled monument?

Scheduling is the selection of nationally important archaeological sites. Scheduled monuments are not always ancient, or visible above ground. They range from prehistoric burial mounds to the types of post medieval and modern sites. The Island has over 100 scheduled monuments.

Works affecting scheduled monuments need scheduled monument consent. These applications are determined by Historic England.

The Local Planning Authority still determine planning applications affecting scheduled monuments and their settings. Undertaking works that need scheduled monument consent without obtaining consent can result in enforcement action and even prosecution.
